Description
eBook version of Rhuddlan - a digital snapshot. Photographs of Rhuddlan the historic town in Wales by Dewi Owen Hughes - Rhuddlan, a strategic crossing point over the River Clwyd with its tidal waters. The river was straightened and canalised by King Edward I to the Irish Sea from the castle. In the course of time have come Roman legions; Saxon and Norman kings with their armies. Heritage buildings of interest include King Edward I’s Castle; Saint Mary’s Church; Parliament House; Banquet House and nearby Bodrhyddan Hall with Saint Mary’s Well, an ancient well-spring, within its grounds. The town once had its own Mint as well as a Dominican Priory and was granted a Royal Charter by King Edward I called the Statute of Rhuddlan, also known as the Statute of Wales. Birth place of Philip Jones Griffiths (the Vietnam War photographer) and Princess Elizabeth Plantagenet (Elizabeth of Rhuddlan).
